Overview
This is a Fantasy Hockey Keeper League run on Yahoo. It will be as similar as possible to the NHL. There is a salary cap.
Franchises
There will be a maximum of 20 franchises in this league (this is the max that Yahoo allows). Each franchise consists of a Pro Team and a Farm Team. The Pro Team will be run on Yahoo and will be the only team for which stats will be accounted for.
The Pro Team includes 23 roster spots just like the NHL – 20 Starters and 3 Reserve Spots. The 20 Starters consist of 3 Centers, 3 Left Wingers, 3 Right Wingers, 3 Forwards, 6 Defensemen, and 2 Goalies. The 3 Reserve/Bench Spots may be any position, with a maximum of 3 goalies on the whole roster. Each position will have a maximum games played of 82. The one exception will be for goalies, for which there will be a total of 82 games between the 2 spots. Any stats that are accrued beyond the 82 GP will NOT be counted.
The Farm Team includes 20 rosters spots, of any position with no max on any position (You could carry 20 goalies if you wanted to)
The Salary Cap will be the exact same as the NHL Salary Cap and will change yearly just as the NHL Salary Cap does. For the 2012-2013 season, the salary cap will be $70,200,000.
Players and Contracts
This league utilizes a salary cap based on the players’ actual contracts with their NHL teams. Each player’s average salary cap hit will be used in this league as opposed to his actual yearly salary. The only official site that will be used to determine a player’s salary is Capgeek.com.
A player is your property until his current contract ends. When it ends, you have the choice to resign him or let him go into free agency.
Players fall under 1 of 2 categories when becoming free agents in the NHL –Unrestricted (UFA) or Restricted (RFA). You should know the difference.
You must commit to resigning your UFA’s by June 30th in the year his current contract expires, regardless of if he has resigned or not. If you commit to him, and he signs a new contract after July 1st, you MUST keep him no matter the contract. If you did not commit to him, he becomes a UFA in our league. If you let him go, and he signs a contract you like, you still have the opportunity to sign him along with the rest of the league.
For an RFA, you may wait until after he signs his new contract to decide to resign him or not. If you choose not to, he goes to waivers. If he clears waivers, he becomes a UFA. After he signs his contract, you will have 1 week to decide whether to keep him or not.
Player Movement
Player movement between your Pro Team and Farm Team will follow NHL Waiver rules.
Also, if a player on your pro team goes on the IR, then you may call up a player from your farm team on an emergency basis. However, when the player returns from the IR, you must return the emergency call-up to your farm team. Waivers do not apply in this case.
Farm Team
As stated earlier, your Farm Team includes 20 rosters spots of any position with no max on any position (You could carry 20 goalies if you wanted to). There are some restrictions, however.
• Your farm team will include only players who meet the rookie qualifications
Rookie Qualifications - To be considered a rookie, a player must not have played in more than 25 NHL games in any preceding seasons, nor in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons. Any player at least 26 years of age (by September 15th of that season) is not considered a rookie.
***HOWEVER***
• You may carry a maximum of 3 non-rookies on your Farm Team
Drafts
Inaugural Dispersal Draft: There will be a 38-Round Dispursal Draft at a starting date TBD to fill out your Pro and Farm Team Rosters. This will be an “offline draft” in the sense that it won’t be done on Yahoo’s Draft Application but rather on the League’s Message Boards.
It will be a Snake Draft with a random order. You must make a minimum of 23 picks in this draft to fill out a Pro Team roster. Anytime after that, you may forfeit the rest of your picks, however this is STRONGLY DISCOURAGED seeing as you will have a very weak roster.
KEEP IN MIND: This draft is to fill out both your Pro and Farm Team rosters. So don’t think you have to draft your 23 Pro Team roster players in the first 23 rounds. You can do it in any order you please!
All players are available to draft except for those that were drafted in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. You also cannot draft players that will be drafted in future NHL Entry Drafts.
Directly after the draft, all undrafted players become Free Agents.
***NO PICKS MAY BE TRADED IN OR DURING THIS DRAFT***
Inaugural Entry Draft: The Inaugural Entry Draft will be held at a starting date TBD.
It is a 5-Round snake draft with the opposite order of the Dispersal Draft. (NOTE: This will be the only Entry Draft that is a Snake Draft)
Your picks in the entry draft will be used to fill the empty spaces in your Pro/Farm Roster
Directly after the draft, all undrafted players become Free Agents.
***NO PICKS MAY BE TRADED IN OR DURING THIS DRAFT***
Entry Drafts: All Entry Drafts after the inaugural one will be 5-Round Standard Drafts (Not Snake Drafts). The order of the draft is determined by league standings (Reverse Order) and includes a Draft Lottery, just as it does in the NHL.
Directly after the draft, all undrafted players become Free Agents.
Free Agent Draft: Discussed in the Free Agency Section
Free Agency
Free Agents consist of every player that is currently not on a team in our league.
During the season, Free Agents can only be added to your team if you have an available roster spot for them
During the off-season, all Free Agents will be made available in a draft.
Free Agent Draft: The Free Agent Draft will be a Standard Draft (Not Snake) during the offseason. The order will be determined by the standings from the previous year with no lottery (20th place gets 1st pick and vice versa).
You will be on the hook for whatever their new contract is. If they haven’t signed an extension yet, you will be on the hook for their new contract no matter what it is worth.
***NO PICKS MAY BE TRADED IN OR DURING THIS DRAFT***
