So I was just doing some thinking about this whole lockout business, and this thought occurred to me about draft picks.
If we lose the ENITRE NHL season due to lockout, what do you guys think of moving all traded draft picks back a year?
For example, if you traded a 2013 1st away to another team, that becomes a 2014 1st, and you still have your 2013 1st Rounder. If you trade a 2014 5th, that becomes a 2015 5th.
My logic for this thinking is this...These trades were made with some sort of prediction of where you thought the team you traded with would finish, and if the 2012 season is cancelled, this would cause randomness in where our draft positions end up. (This also brings up more debate as to how we would determine the draft order, but it would most likely be random)
Just bringing up debate for a possible issue we may have with the league. (Also, I hope none of the GMs that I personally traded draft picks with see this as a way of me weaseling out of trading draft picks you wanted, so I wouldn't mind letting you keep the draft pick in the current year)

Disagree. For a couple of reasons.
1) If we move the picks back, there are those 2014 picks that were already traded. If you move those back another year to 2015, you have introduced a lot of uncertainty as to the value of that pick due to the mostly unknown talents and depth of the 2015 draft class.
2) Pusing the picks back a year also diminishes the value by extending the period of time before that pick begins to generate points. If I traded away my 2013 2d, and added a different 2d from a separate trade, then I don't get a second round pick until 2014 if we push the picks back a year. That's not the intent of my deal.

I'd like to figure out how we are going to determine the draft order before I decide. Would opposite of last years entry draft work? (So say if I had the first pick last draft I have the 20th pick this time)

So if it is a random order, and the season got canceled.. January 1st, When would we know the order? Just curious that's all. As for the real question, I personally am fine with moving all the traded picks back a year. But if I had potentially traded away/for picks in this years upcoming draft my answer could be different.

Disagree. I agree with all of the Preds points. I don't really see the need to move them back..

The order would probably be determined around the same time the NHL does their draft lottery, so sometime early summer?

Would it just be randomly selected?

Yeah. There are websites online where you can generate random lists. Or I can just write the 20 team names on a piece of paper and pull them out of a hat.

I can generate you a random list quickly and easily in Excel. Or tell you how to do it.

It won't be a problem to randomize the list. I even saw a website that e-mails all of you the list so you know there's no foul play.
