So me and my buddy got into a disagreement today about if the league as a whole is positive or negative when it comes to plus minus. I said negative because of shorthanded goals. Anybody wanna contribute to this dispute??
Also I was playing NHL 2013 yesterday and there was an empty net and I got a penalty shot...the game froze. Tried it again and it froze again. Has that ever happened before? What happens if there is a penalty shot on an empty net, does the world end?

On the penalty shot with an empty net.. I am almost sure a goal is just awarded to the player that was taken down on the breakaway.

Do you think that has ever happened?

Do you think that has ever happened? Yeah, that's exactly how that works. If a penalty is called against a player who has a chance at an open net (ie, breakaway), the goal is awarded automatically. I once saw Kovalchuk dive to knock the puck off of Iginla's stick when Iginla had a breakaway on an empty Thrashers net. He didn't get the puck, but he got Iginla's skates. Tripping call, goal awarded.

Anybody wanna contribute to this dispute?? The league as a whole has a zero plus/minus. Any plus to one team has a corresponding negative to the other team. In the case of shorthanded goals, they don't just hand out a minus to the team that gets scored upon. The scoring team gets a plus. Just to confirm, I checked the last few years of league +/- and it is, in fact, always zero.

But if they're giving both sides a plus or minus on a shorthanded opportunity, that's 4 on 5.
-5 + +4 = -1

Exactly. on shorthanded goals that give a plus to one side and a minus to the other but the team that gets the minus has an extra guy on the ice so whenever there is a shorthanded goal the league average should go down one.
